In 1946, designer Ilmari Tapiovaara and his wife Annikki won the commission to design the interior of the Domus Academica student housing complex in Helsinki. Confident that functionalism would promote social equality, Tapiovaara created the Domus Lounge Chair as part of a series of furniture for the students.
